My Read: How Joe Biden Won a Diverse Group of Faith Voters
Christian dominance in Western culture, and now American politics, is lauded by some and decried by others. Many perspectives exist on Church/State relations and on how Christian influence might be appropriately exercised.
Many foundational principles of Christianity are widely recognized and shared, not only across the diversity of Christianity but to a degree across most other religious traditions as well.
Christians of the Reformed tradition talk of Common Grace which they find supported in Scripture (Rom2:14-15, Matt 5:45, Luke 6:33, 2 Kings 10:29-31). It can explain how a sense of morality is distributed throughout humanity by Creator/God as he chose to make man in his own image. For Christians, this can account for the moral rectitude of many non-Christians who also struggle against the chaos of a “fallen world.”
The idea of Common Grace can lead to much greater respect for diversity of thought as we search out Common Ground for increased cooperation and understanding. A common high-mindedness (a temptation for many of us) is fraught with attitudes and behaviors that Christ himself rebuked in the strongest of terms: the attitudes and practices of the religious establishment of his day.
